Pixel Buds Pro: Australian specs, pricing and release date

Google is finally adding active noise cancellation to its line of Pixel Buds headphones. Here’s everything you need to know.

Earlier today, Google debuted an arsenal of new consumer technologies at its I/O Developer Conference. (If you were still asleep, you can check out all the Google I/O announcements here.)

One of the products unveiled was a new model of Pixel Buds headphones, unimaginatively titled Pixel Buds Pro. Boasting active noise cancellation, the Pixel Buds Pro are ready to directly compete with high-end headphones such as the Apple AirPods Pro and Sony WF-1000XM4.

Let’s see what’s different.

Google Buds Pro: availability in Australia

Google has yet to announce a firm release date for The Pixel Buds Pro – but they are expected to launch “this winter”. This means that we should receive them in August at the latest. [Update: Google Australia has since confirmed that we will be getting the Buds Pros on 21 July, 2022.)

Google Buds Pro: Australian pricing

The Pixel Buds Pro will retail in Australia for $299. That puts it roughly in the same price bracket as Apple’s entry level Airpods ($279). A pair of AirPods Pros, meanwhile, will set you back $399.

Google Buds Pro: Design and features

The Buds Pro’s main claim to fame is undoubtedly the inclusion of active noise cancellation. This is achieved via a custom 6-core audio chip developed in-house by Google. The ear tips allegedly use a patented seal to fit the user’s ear to help maximize the amount of noise that is cancelled. There’s also a transparency mode that lets in ambient noise if you need to keep an eye on your surroundings.

Other standout features include Volume EQ (which automatically balances the audio as you adjust the volume), Multipoint Pairing (which lets you connect to a phone and laptop/tablet simultaneously), and Spatial Audio (which improves immersion when watching spatial audio – movies and TV shows supported.)

Naturally, the Buds come with Google Assistant built-in, letting you control most functions via voice commands.

In terms of looks, the Pixel Buds Pro look a lot like Google’s existing line of Pixel Buds true wireless headphones. They will be available in three colors: Charcoal, Fog and Lemongrass.

Google Buds Pro: Battery life

Google promises 7 hours of listening time with active noise cancellation enabled. You can extend that to “up to 11 hours” with noise cancellation turned off. The charging case can boost these numbers up to 20 hours and 31 hours respectively. That’s better than what the competition is currently offering, though we’d advise waiting for the Finder review to see if Google’s claims stack up.
