Corey Waddell took a nasty blow to the head when he collided with Mitch Barnett’s hip. Wadell left the field for an HIA and did not return.

The Knights came up short when Brent Naden made the wrong call as he rushed Kalyn Ponga who rounded him and passed over Bradman Best to score. Things heated up in the back game as Best crossed after Joe Stimson pushed Ponga into the back. Lachlan Fitzgibbon rushed to protect his teammate before several other players joined in the fight.

The Bulldogs hit back through superstar winger Josh Addo-Carr. The speedster, who admitted before the game that he loves playing in the rain, ran through a Matt Burton sniper in the corner. Burton failed to convert – but he netted a 29th-minute penalty goal to level the score.

Edrick Lee crossed for his first NRL try since 2020. It came after Kalyn Ponga threw a cut pass to Bradman Best who transferred the ball to Lee who scored in the corner. Ponga could not convert, keeping the score 6-0.

The Knights took an early lead thanks to a penalty goal from Kalyn Ponga. Bulldogs executor Paul Vaughan was about to tip Leo Thompson to the horizontal in a tackle.

The Bulldogs are desperate to get their season back on track and prove their Round 8 win over the Roosters was no fluke.

Meanwhile, the Knights are equally desperate for a win after seven straight losses that saw them sit last.

Newcastle have been through a long spell of injuries and Mitch Barnett’s long ban, but a host of players – including Barnett – are returning for this Friday night clash, so there will be no excuses if they don’t at least show some signs of improvement.

One key is halfback Adam Clune, who missed last week with a knee injury. His return pushes Phoenix Crossland to the bench.

Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett made a big change to his backline before kickoff with Jayden Okunbor dropping to 17th and Jake Averillo dropping to 18th man.
