Thanks to two processors controlling eight microphones, Auto NC optimization and specially designed 30mm drivers, the XM5s are poised to be the best these headphones have ever sounded, as well as the best and smartest noise cancellation to date. Sony claims enhanced sound clarity and bass reproduction through optimized circuitry and meticulous build quality.
Speaking of build quality, the XM5s sport a new design language with better comfort, quiet construction and a new soft synthetic leather material. The headphones look great with their larger cups and sleek band and come in the usual black and “silver” colorways.
Elsewhere, beamforming microphones and AI-based noise reduction, adaptive sound control, Google Assistant/Alexa compatibility, Android Fast Pair and 30-hour battery life with fast power for a three-charge hours in three minutes round out the impressive feature set for the new headphones.
Early reviews of the WH-1000XM5 are overwhelmingly positive. Wired rated them “among the best wireless headphones you can buy”, while What Hi-Fi gave them five stars, saying its “redesign of its premium noise-canceling headphones wasn’t without risk, but the Sony WH-1000XM5 is a sonic triumph.
