A Supercheap Auto worker who confronted a woman when she allegedly used a pram to steal from a Gold Coast store has quit the business.
The employee was removed from his post this week as the retailer conducts a review of the incident.
The decision to remove it sparked a backlash against the business with customers on social media saying they would no longer shop there.
Footage of the incident, seen in the video abovewent viral last week after being posted on social media.
On Friday, Supercheap Auto revealed that the man has since decided to leave the business.
“I can confirm that the team member involved in the incident has decided to leave the company,” a company spokesperson said in a statement.
“We continue to offer support to the team member.”
The statement says a “full review” has been completed.
He also reiterated company policy that staff should not confront suspected shoplifters.
“These policies and standards, which prohibit confronting suspected shoplifters and physical contact with customers, are designed to protect our team members and our customers,” the spokesperson said.
“We have extensive video surveillance in our stores and suspected cases of shoplifting are reported to the police along with footage of the suspected offenders.
“The health, safety and well-being of our team members and customers is our top priority and we are committed to maintaining a safe working and shopping environment.
“Our health and safety standards are not just words on a page. They are central to how we operate our business.
The company said the employee “will receive full employee rights.”
7NEWS.com.au can also reveal that staff at Supercheap Auto have received an email from Managing Director Benjamin Ward reminding them of “the company’s policies and standards for customer interaction”.
“Call the Cops”
In the footage, the employee and the woman with the pram are seen in an altercation outside the Supercheap Auto store in Ashmore as he accuses her of shoplifting.
He claims that the woman does not have a baby in the pram. “Do you want me to call the cops?” we hear it said.
The woman responds, “Call the cops, mate… Let my baby go.”
As the man grabs the handle of the pram, he says, “You don’t even have (a baby) in there.”
As the pair fight for control of the pram, at least two boxes of apparent stock fall from the pram.
The footage does not show how the confrontation ended.
Queensland Police told 7NEWS.com.au last week that no formal complaints had been filed over the alleged theft offences.
